Journalism 2.0 Ethics & Technology

Seminar schedule

The daylong workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 6, in the Regency Suite of the City Campus Union on the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln.

The schedule is:

8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.: Coffee and rolls

8:30 to 10 a.m.: Journalism and social networks. Journalists increasingly will need to deal with social networks in gathering and distributing news. How do you vet sources contacted through Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and other social networks? What guidelines should you follow when using photographs or artwork from social-networking sites? What guidelines, if any, should your staff follow for personal content and communication on these sites? Do you need to keep any ethical considerations in mind if you decide to distribute news through social-networking sites?

10:15 to 11:45 a.m.: Blogging. What guidelines should you have for reporters as they blog, whether for accuracy and verification in live-blogging a news story or matters of fairness, commentary, opinion, taste? What guidelines, if any, should you have for your staff in using material from public blogs, in private blogs your staff members write on personal sites? What guidelines, if any, should you have for community blogs on your site or for comments on blogs? Do you allow staff members to comment anonymously on your site or elsewhere?
11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Lunch on your own
1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.:  Breaking news. How do traditional standards change when you’re covering a breaking news story with continual updates of fragments of the story? What are your standards for accuracy and fairness? How do you stay first with the news while guarding against false reports that circulate during emotional events? How do you correct errors that occur in the breaking story? When does fairness require that you get response to a claim or charge before publishing anything online? Or does fairness come not in each update but in the whole day’s flow of updates?
3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. : Visual journalism in the digital age. How should your staff handle such issues as digital manipulation of photos and videos; staging of photos and videos; issues relating to virtual reality, computer animations and simulations; use of sound effects in videos, pod casts and audio slide shows?
